   The Joy of Pitman Shorthand
With ordinary, cursive handwriting the best speed of writing is about 35 words per minute (wpm). People, however, speak at about 150 - 180 wpm, so the scribes who needed to record important speech were faced with a physical problem of keeping up with what was said. As a result they developed alternative, quicker forms of writing.

Books and Links about Pitman Shorthand
Copperplate: Pitman books have printed symbols which are idealized, each stroke identical to the others of the same kind. It's sort of like the idealized handwriting specimens in a child's handwriting textbook. The process for these special diagrams was called "copperplate".
