The Website Devoted to Pen Shorthand
This site is devoted to all those people who find shorthand a means of communication, an indispensable business or personal tool for making records and notes, and for those of us (really weird people like me!) who are fascinated by it and enjoy it for no other reason.
   Encyclopedia Brittanica: Shorthand
also called STENOGRAPHY, a system for rapid writing that uses symbols or abbreviations for letters, words, or phrases. Among the most popular modern systems are Pitman, Gregg, and Speedwriting.
Cool Word of the Day: Ampersand
The ampersand was invented in 63 BC by a Roman named Tiro as part of his Latin shorthand system. The symbol is a condensed form of the Greek word et (and). Depending on which font your computer is using to show this text, you might be able to see the crossed "t" at the lower right corner of the "&" symbol.
   Shorthand Overview
Most traditional shorthand systems use a phonetic representation of a word as opposed to the way it is spelled. English spelling has 50 speech sounds and 26 letters to represent them.
